Dear Editor,
We read with great interest the article by Jain et al. entitled, “The study of obesity among children aged 5–18 years in Jaipur, Rajasthan.”[1] We applaud the efforts of the authors in describing the challenges in detail. However, we would like to bring to your notice that a number of eye diseases are associated with obesity and not just the systemic diseases mentioned by the respected authors in the introduction. The information regarding the more prominent ocular problems are as follows.
Refractive errors, strabismus, cataract, glaucoma, age-related maculopathy, diabetic, and hypertensive retinopathy are common ocular associations.[2] Retinal vein occlusion,[3] third cranial nerve palsy,[4] papilledema, and pseudotumor cerebri [5] are other blinding conditions which need special mention.
Regretfully, most of the health institutes tend not to focus on eye examination, and adequate knowledge is not shared on the subject. It is recommended that mandatory eye screening should be done in all cases of childhood obesity to avoid ocular complications in the future.
